Maniapoto Māori Trust Board develops Environmental Management Plan

A long term plan that describes Ngāti Maniapoto aspirations for a safe and healthy environment will be launched by the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board this October. The Maniapoto Iwi Environmental Management Plan will also identify the key environmental issues of the present and how Ngāti Maniapoto wishes to address those issues. Kōwhai Consulting's Keith Ikin who is assisting with this project sees the plan as a positive tool for Ngāti Maniapoto and for the wider community. ‘Our waterways, native flora and fauna, our lands and even the air that we breathe are struggling to cope with the demands of development. We need to think about the environment we want for our children and for generations to come, and work together towards that' Keith says.

The plan will also assist us to educate our communities and our children. It will assess the impacts on the environment within the region and propose some strategies to assist us to move forward. According to Keith ‘It is clear that Ngāti Maniapoto wants development to continue within the region but this development must not be at the continual detriment of our environment. The Maniapoto Māori Trust Board wants to engage constructively with the wider community on environmental issues and this plan will assist the Board to do that, it seeks to ensure that Maniapoto Marae, Hapū and Regional Management Committees are involved from the outset in decisions related to the local environment'

Full information on the development of the plan will be posted on the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board website at www.maniapoto.iwi.nz . In addition, hui are planned for Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and Hamilton in June. Please contact Keith at Kōwhai Consulting for further information.

An Iwi Environmental Management Plan for Ngāti Maniapoto

Our lands and waterways within Ngāti Maniapoto have changed significantly within the last 20 years. Our native animal and bush life, our water, our land and the air that we breathe is struggling with the impact of development, waste management and a growing population.

What is the Maniapoto Iwi Environmental Management Plan?

This plan is a statement by Ngāti Maniapoto on what is important to us in regard to the environment. It outlines the key environmental issues within our rohe, how we would like these issues addressed and the future we would like our children to inherit. It also outlines to local and central government and external groups how Marae, Hapu, Regional Management Committees and the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board wish to engage on environmental issues.

Who is developing this Plan?

The plan will represent the views of Ngāti Maniapoto descendents, hapū, Marae and Regional management Committees. It is being drafted by Kōwhai Consulting Limited under the management of the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board. The plan will be written by Maniapoto primarily for Maniapoto.
