Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho Projects

Maniapoto Geographic Information System (GIS)

The impetus for this project was an incident that resulted in the destruction of a taonga known as ‘Rongomai o te Kakara’ in the Marokopa area in March 2010. A national inquiry lead by the Minister of Māori Affairs resulted in various interventions. One intervention is the taonga register GIS project to protect and preserve wāhi tapu and sites of significance within the Maniapoto rohe. Stage 1 involved the establishment of an advisory group and a series of hui with regional management committees to identify waahi tapu and sites of significance. Stage 2 is currently underway and involves the implementation of a GIS platform.

The land is our life, without it we can’t survive.  It’s as simple as that.
